AMMRGHSS NALLOORNAD.WAYANAD
As a part of Ambedkar Centenary Celebrations in 1990 the Government of Kerala , decided to start Model Residential Schools for Tribal students. The Government launched the pilot project one at Kattela in Trivandrum and another at Nalloornad in Wayanad District. Under the auspices supervision of Tribal Development Department a Model Residential School for Boys started in Wayanad District in 1990.
Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Model Residential school is situated at Edavaka Gramapanchayath in Mananthavady
Taluk . From vth standard to Plus Two classes there are 354 students to achieve their academic goals . This institution played an important role as a centre of excellence especially for Tribal students in Wayanad District. The tribal students attained many achievements in academic and non academic activities, especially in Hockey. This institution gave a time bound training for the mental and physical development of the students..
The first certified hockey coach from Kurichiya community in moulding a Hockey team of tribal students in Wayanad . Mr. Satheesan , hailing from Peechangode a near by place tamed the ground of Ambedkar Memmorial Model Residential School [AMMRGHSS] to play hockey , a sport totally alien to the hills and tribes. He completed the matriculation in 1984 from G V Raja Sports School Thiruvananthapuram. The year 1995 he earned with certificates from the National Institute of Sports and Coaching Diploma from Sports Authority of India,Southern Central , Bengluru . He came directly to AMMRGHSS embracing the dream of teaching hockey to tribal students.
V.K Sreedharan Sir the then Headmaster , gave permission to train the boys after school hours as AMMRGHSS which was not a Sports school. There was no provision to appoint a hockey coach Mr. Satheesan trained them for the next two years without taking any financial aid.
The Tribal Development Department acknowledged the talents in tribal students in hockey and appointed Mr. Satheesan as a daily wage staff on contract for hundred rupees. In 2008 he was promoted as a regular coach a first for any regular school in Kerala. Any given day , they get only two hours training that too after school hours . We have no felicities like Astroturf and modern equipments. The team won both Under 17 and Under 19 Championships , the Zonal games at Kannur They represented Jawaharlal Nehru Junior Championship in Delhi in 2015 and 2016 , after winning the school tournament of Kerala both the years. Though we could not reach the quarter finals we won match against Punjab. We consider this a big achievement even thier winning are more than Gold Medals. The AMMRGHSS students were the part of Kerala Team that reached the Under 17 quarter finals at the school National Games in Bhopal in 2016.
Hockey success has helped many of our students get jobs in Sports Quota in Central and State Government. Some have joined the Police department and many of them joined the Army. But what the school needs is a good ground. A major disadvantage we face at the national level is our lack of preparedness to play on Astroturf. We have talents but we want facilities . There are many students who have the potentials to reach the national team . Given the right support and facilities they definitely will become the future name in Indian Hockey.
